Appalachian Power to host wildfire preparedness efforts during regional storm exercise

ROANOKE, Va., Sept. 10, 2026 – Appalachian Power Company (APCo) will host a regional wildfire preparedness exercise that brings together emergency management, forestry, fire service, utility and public safety professionals from across Southwest Virginia to strengthen coordination before, during and after a wildfire emergency.

Participants, including representatives from the Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF), Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and local agencies, will work through realistic wildfire scenarios while demonstrating the tools, technologies and partnerships that help protect communities, critical infrastructure and public safety.

WHAT:

  • Participants will work through realistic wildfire scenarios focused on preparedness, emergency response and recovery operations.
  • Media will have the opportunity to view APCo’s wildfire response technologies and equipment, including drones and specialized track vehicles.
  • A live wire demonstration at 11:30 a.m. will be presented by wildfire prevention and public awareness professionals from LG&E and KU.

WHEN: Tuesday, Sept. 15; Media availability 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHO:

  • APCo/AEP leadership and operations representatives supporting wildfire preparedness, emergency response and incident coordination
  • Representatives from the Virginia DOF, VDEM, and local fire service, emergency management and public safety agencies
