Appalachian Power Company (APCo) has been selected to receive funding through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) grant program to modernize the nation’s existing coal-fired power plant fleet, supporting targeted upgrades at the company’s John Amos and Mountaineer plants. The program focuses on high-impact projects that improve efficiency, extend plant life and enhance performance.
The funds awarded to APCo will support targeted upgrades at both plants, including cooling tower and condenser enhancements at Amos, and boiler upgrades at Mountaineer. Both facilities will also see environmental performance benefits through electrostatic precipitator component replacements. Together, these improvements will enhance operational efficiency, boost reliability and extend the useful life of the power plants.
APCo applied for $35 million through the DOE program to support the planned upgrades.
“Amos and Mountaineer plants have served our customers and the nation for decades,” said Aaron Walker, APCo president and COO. “This grant will allow us to make key investments in these plants and ensure they continue to provide reliable service for years to come. Seeking federal grants is just one of the many ways we are helping to address the affordability concerns of our customers, and we are grateful for the leadership and support from the U.S. DOE and the state of West Virginia.”
