For years, certain specialized services and repairs were outsourced to external vendors. Today, employees in Appalachian Power Company's (APCo) Meter Laboratory and Equipment Repair Shop are demonstrating how expertise, innovation and teamwork can keep that work within the company while delivering significant benefits.
Several initiatives have emerged from the groups' efforts to align resources, reduce costs and improve efficiency.
One example is the Meter Laboratory's decision to build primary metering enclosures in house. Previously constructed by an outside vendor, the enclosures are now assembled by APCo employees using purchased components and internal expertise. The team works closely with meter electricians and account managers to ensure customer specifications and project deadlines are met, while reducing labor costs associated with outsourcing.
The Equipment Repair Shop has also expanded its capabilities to support Fleet operations. After identifying a need for more efficient torque wrench calibrations and repairs, the team purchased calibration equipment and completed specialized training. The new process allows hundreds of torque wrenches to be calibrated internally, reducing costs, minimizing downtime and eliminating the delays associated with shipping tools to outside vendors.
Building on that success, the Meter Laboratory launched a mobile calibration service that travels to APCo districts. Working alongside district personnel, the team verifies measurement equipment is operating within required standards while reducing transportation risks and equipment downtime.
Another major achievement has been the repair of electronic reclosers, some of the most valuable pieces of equipment used on the distribution system. Since April, employees have repaired 12 units that otherwise could have been scrapped, helping increase equipment availability and reduce replacement costs. The effort also supports reliability by allowing valuable assets to be returned to service more quickly.
The team's expertise was also put to work on APCo's switching trailer used for employee training. Multiple work groups collaborated to install a repaired electronic recloser in the trailer, creating a modern training asset that will benefit employees for years to come.
According to Matthew Mullins, APCo equipment maintenance facility and meter lab supervisor, the initiatives reflect a shared commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement. He noted that the work groups have found new ways to support one another while creating value for the company and its customers.
The results demonstrate how APCo employees continue to find innovative solutions that reduce costs, improve efficiency and strengthen service across the organization.
