As Labor Day approaches, we want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the ongoing drought. As we head into one of the busiest boating weekends of the year, we'd like to share a few important safety reminders and project updates.
Stay Safe on the Water This Labor Day Weekend
Safety remains our top priority. While Smith Mountain Lake continues to offer outstanding opportunities for boating and recreation, lower-than-average water levels can be seen across the project. These conditions continue to create unique challenges for boaters, swimmers and other recreational users. Exposed rocks, shoals, debris and shallow-water areas may be present in locations where they are not typically visible. We encourage everyone to stay alert, follow channel markers, monitor water levels by visiting SmithMountainProject.com and exercise extra caution when launching, docking or operating watercraft.
If you're heading out on the water this Labor Day weekend:
- Wear a properly fitted life jacket.
- Operate at safe speeds.
- Never boat under the influence of alcohol.
- Stay alert to changing lake conditions.
Project Operations and Drought Response
As the summer recreation season begins to wind down, we also want to provide an update on project operations. Appalachian Power continues to operate the Smith Mountain Project under its federally approved Water Management Plan and has implemented all available water conservation measures outlined in the plan in response to ongoing drought conditions. These actions are designed to balance multiple responsibilities, including maintaining water levels when possible, protecting downstream environmental resources and supporting reliable electric generation for customers across the region.
Debris Management Update
The lake crew's license-required debris removal season runs through Oct. 31. After that date, crews will continue to respond year-round to reports of significant debris hazards in the main channel. We also remain committed to removing debris following high-flow events that introduce significant debris into the project, regardless of the time of year. While debris reports have declined significantly this year due to drought conditions, please note that some reported debris may be in areas inaccessible to our equipment, particularly along shallow shorelines and within coves. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and report significant navigation hazards when encountered.
Seasonal Recreation Schedule Changes
Many third-party seasonal facilities and recreational activities will begin transitioning to fall operating schedules over the coming weeks. Those living and recreating on the lake should anticipate changing schedules, shorter daylight hours and varying access at some ramps and shoreline locations.
