The people who maintain power lines, respond during storms and keep electricity flowing depend on more than tools and equipment to do their jobs safely. They also rely on professionals like Cate Russell.

Russell serves as a district nurse for Appalachian Power Company (APCo), providing health and wellness support for employees throughout the Roanoke District and neighboring service areas. Her work includes first aid, health screenings, wellness education and safety initiatives designed to help employees stay healthy both on and off the job.

A licensed practical nurse (LPN) with a background in pediatrics, pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine, Russell joined APCo seeking a new professional challenge.

"I love learning, and I love educating," Russell said. "Helping people understand how to stay healthy and safe is one of the most rewarding parts of my job."

Russell works closely with employees in the greater Roanoke area, providing guidance on topics such as hydration, heat-related illness prevention and tick safety. She also participates in field visits and safety briefings to better understand employees' work environments and identify opportunities to support their well-being.

Her role is part of APCo's broader commitment to employee health and safety. Occupational health nurses are now embedded across the company's seven districts (Roanoke and Christiansburg in Virginia, Kingsport in Tennessee and Beckley, Charleston, Huntington and Wheeling in West Virginia) bringing resources directly to employees and making it easier to access support while on the job.

For Russell, the role combines her passion for healthcare, education and advocacy.

"Patient advocacy is top priority with me," she said. "I'll always focus on helping people get the support they need."

By providing education, resources and care, Russell helps ensure employees can continue serving customers and communities safely and effectively throughout the region.
