As energy costs continue to fluctuate, you may be looking for simple ways to save money without sacrificing comfort. Appalachian Power Company’s (APCo) Bring Your Own Thermostat (BYOT) program lets you do both: take control of your energy use and earn rewards for small, smart adjustments.
The BYOT program is for customers who own or install a compatible smart thermostat (for example, Google Nest or ecobee). Once enrolled, participants allow brief, limited adjustments to their thermostat during periods of high energy usage . These typically occur on the hottest days of the year. These changes are small (often only a degree or two), scheduled to minimize disruption, and help reduce strain on the grid.
For example, a short event on a peak day might nudge cooling setpoints up 1–2°F for a few hours. You’ll be notified in advance and can override any event at any time through your thermostat or its mobile app.
There’s also a financial incentive. By enrolling in the BYOT program, you will receive an upfront enrollment bonus and ongoing seasonal rewards.
The BYOT program keeps you in control. Participation is voluntary, events are brief and you can opt out of an event or the program at any time. If you don’t yet have a compatible thermostat, additional rebates may be available when you purchase one.
APCo’s BYOT program is an easy way to increase home efficiency, reduce peak usage and earn rewards, all without significant investment or loss of comfort.
