Volunteers bag thousands of potatoes for local food distribution

July 28, 2025

Volunteers included Tracy Hertig, Karen Gilmer, Scarlet Crowder, Jacob Holmes, Jason Smith, Evan Hearl, Alan Bragg, Robert Chapman and Laura Coleman.

A group of Appalachian Power volunteers joined Feeding Southwest Virginia to assist in processing and bagging approximately 4,000 pounds of potatoes.

The food bank had received a donation of 20,000 pounds and urgently needed to distribute it to those in need. Knowing that the volunteers were regular supporters of the agency, they reached out for assistance, and the team quickly organized to help.

Over the course of a couple of hours, the volunteers examined each potato in the 4,000-pound supply to ensure they were in good condition and then bagged them in 8 to 10-pound bags for easy dispersal. The bags will be used in upcoming food distributions, with many being allocated to smaller community food banks.

The group regularly volunteers at Feeding Southwest Virginia by assembling food packs for students, but this was their first experience with a project of this scale.

Feeding Southwest Virginia does an outstanding job serving those in need within the region, and the volunteers appreciated the opportunity to support them, even on short notice. They were informed that they would be the first call for assistance in the future when needs arise.
