Crews Restoring Service After Severe Storms

Update: 8/10/2026 7:37 PM ET

ROANOKE, Va., Aug. 10, 2026 -- Appalachian Power Company (APCo) crews are working to restore electric service after severe storms moved through the company’s service territory Monday afternoon and evening, leaving thousands of customers without power. Crews were prepared for the storm and positioned to respond as conditions allowed.

Outages peaked at a little more than 28,000 customers at 6:30 p.m., with about 475 outage cases reported after damaging winds and heavy rain affected portions of the service territory.

As of early this evening, Virginia remains the most impacted, with about 23,000 customers without power, while West Virginia has a little more than 5,000 customers out. Crews are assessing damage, making repairs and restoring service as quickly and safely as possible.

APCo expects to restore power to most customers impacted by today’s severe storm by the end of day Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Customers are encouraged to report outages and check estimated restoration times at AppalachianPower.com/Outages or through the Appalachian Power mobile app. Customers also can sign up for notifications to receive restoration updates by text, email or phone.

For safety, APCo reminds customers to stay away from downed lines and anything they may be touching. Downed wires should always be considered energized and dangerous. Customers using generators should follow manufacturer instructions and never operate generators inside homes, garages or enclosed spaces.

“Our crews are responding as quickly and safely as conditions allow,” said Jason Baker, vice president of distribution operations. “We appreciate our customers’ patience as crews work through storm damage and restore power.”
