CHARLESTON, W.Va., Aug. 26, 2025 – Appalachian Power representatives plan to upgrade the transmission system in Kanawha County as part of the Chemical-Washington Street Transmission Line Rebuild Project. The project team plans to host an open house for the community to learn about the project and share feedback.
The project involves rebuilding approximately 2 miles of a 1920s 46-kilovolt electric transmission line with modern equipment to reduce outages, increase capacity and improve reliability.
Company representatives encourage community members to attend the open house to learn more project details and provide input. There is no formal presentation, so attendees are welcome to join at any time during the event:
- September 9, 5 - 7 p.m. – Shining Light Celebration Church, 1800 5th Avenue, Charleston, WV 25387
“These upgrades replace equipment dating back a century,” said George Porter, Appalachian Power spokesperson. “We’re looking at options to rebuild the line in the existing right-of-way where possible. We rely on landowners to provide feedback and to help us work toward a proposed line route that minimizes the impact to the community.”
Residents who are unable to attend the open house can visit the project website and virtual open house at AppalachianPower.com/Chemical-Washington.
Landowners within the project area can expect to receive a packet in the mail that includes additional project details. The project team plans to use input from the community and additional field work to determine a power line route that reduces impact on the community and environment.
Company representatives plan to file an application with the Public Service Commission of West Virginia early next year. If approved, construction is expected to begin in summer 2027 and conclude by fall 2028.
Appalachian Power crews are currently rebuilding 0.5 miles of the existing transmission line due to structure damage. However, the construction on this portion is not a part of this project.
