As part of our ongoing commitment to community engagement and employee development, members of the local Black Employee Resource Group (BERG) at Appalachian Power and Kentucky Power recently partnered with the YWCA Charleston to host a Professional Development Program focused on enhancing cross-cultural communication. 

Sonya Hairston, Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Charleston, led the session and shared compelling insights into navigating sensitive and often challenging conversations across cultural lines.

"We don't just manage difference; we build bridges and create space," Hairston said.

Her guidance emphasized the importance of active listening, empathy and open dialogue as tools for deepening mutual understanding within our teams and the communities we serve.

This collaboration underscores APCo's dedication to creating inclusive environments—both inside and outside our organization—where every voice is heard and valued.
