Volunteering

Read to Me Day

Read to Me Day is an annual event in which our employees volunteer to read to students at schools throughout the company's West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee communities. Each year, the program reaches about 20,000 elementary students.

Since 2001, we've donated nearly 7,000 books to school libraries and read aloud to more than 280,000 students.

In 2021, in celebration of the 20th year of the program, we moved Read to Me Day to YouTube. Children and educators are now able to access the program online at their convenience and enjoy the Read Aloud book selections from the past 20 years.

heart walk

Our employees in Charleston, W.Va., and Roanoke, Va., have participated in the Heart Walk for a number of years. The Heart Walk is the American Heart Association's premier event for raising funds to save lives from heart disease.

Employees from the Roanoke area take a moment to pose before the event.

Community Events

Our employees are active volunteers in the communities we serve. We volunteer our time at food pantries and food drives, school activities, animal shelters, and in many other ways to help enrich the lives of others.

In January 2020, employees in the Charleston, W.Va., area donated their time to assist Mountaineer Food Bank with a mobile food pantry in Elkview. Our employees in the Roanoke area volunteered to decorate the Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia for the holidays in December 2020.

UNITED WAY

Our company and our employees are often the largest contributors to United Way campaigns for the 12 United Way organizations within our West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee service area. Every year, employees and the company contribute about $400,000 to United Way. Employees are actively involved in United Way as well, serving on allocation committees and boards, as well as participating in United Way Day of Caring activities.

Employees gather before heading to a worksite for the United Way of Central West Virginia's Day of Caring in September 2019.
