Oklahoma-born singer, songwriter, performer, television and movie actor Sam Harris will serve as the Grand Marshal of the 15th Annual PSO Christmas Parade of Lights in downtown Tulsa. The event is Dec. 11 at 6 p.m.
Harris’ first solo performance was at age 22 and it caught the eye of talent scouts, eventually landing him a shot at stardom on television’s Star Search. He played to adoring audiences on the show week after week and won the grand prize.
Harris received the Frank Sinatra Pop Singing Award in a performance that captured Sinatra’s attention and prompted him to say, “The kid’s got it. Sam, don’t get any better till I get out of the business.”
Harris has done concert tours, appeared at Carnegie Hall and performed on television talk shows and to standing audiences worldwide. He’s starred in theatre productions of Cabaret and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He received a Drama Desk nomination for his role in Tommy Tune’s Grease and has played the legendary Al Jolson in The Jazz Singer.
“PSO is extremely honored to host an Oklahoma-born, world-class performer and singer as the Grand Marshal of the PSO Parade of Lights. Harris is coming home to Oklahoma specifically to lead off the Parade and his presence will inspire young performers and singers all along the Parade route to continue to reach far and wide to achieve their goals,” said Carole Huff Hicks, PSO community affairs manager.
“This is the 15
th year PSO has sponsored the Parade, and we’re pleased with the caliber of participation and interest this seasonal Tulsa event brings to our community,” she said.
“We are very proud and fortunate to have PSO as name sponsor of the parade,” said Linda Baldwin, Downtown Tulsa Unlimited parade coordinator.” We value the company’s commitment to downtown Tulsa, as well as its support of communities that surround Tulsa. It is the involvement of PSO in the community that allows us to produce such a magnificent parade.”
