The new Westlake Substation and the Blaine-Westlake transmission line in Franklin County, Va. The facility reinforces the electric system in an area that has one of the fastest growing demands for electricity in the company's service area.
The Blaine-Westlake 138 kV transmission line improves electric service to Franklin County and Smith Mountain Lake customers in two ways, it reduces the distance between the customers and the substation by inserting a new electric substation at Westlake, essentially between existing facilities at Blaine and Penhook. That reduces the distance between customers and the station and helps reduce the likelihood of outages. With a closer substation, Appalachian Power will be able to respond quicker when power outages do occur.
