![]() The first phase of a new 138 kV electric reinforcement for Franklin County, Va., and Smith Mountain Lake customers is in service. The company energized the 10 mile Blaine-Westlake line and the new Westlake substation in the spring. The projects serve the one of the fastest growing parts of the Appalachian Power service territory. The first $28 million project involves construction of the Westlake Station and 138 kV transmission lines to connect it to the company’s Blaine and Penhook stations. Construction on the Westlake-Penhook part of the project is scheduled to start in the fall of 2008. The transmission lines are constructed on single-pole steel structures, and the station uses a low-profile construction with vegetative shielding to reduce the viewshed disturbance (see photos of station and line).Westlake Project Maps
