As warm weather and outdoor activities return to the Smith Mountain Project area, Appalachian Power reminds property owners and contractors that removal of many forms of vegetation along the shoreline requires prior approval from the company as outlined in the Shoreline Management Plan.The SMP requires property owners seeking to remove shoreline buffer vegetation having stalks with a thickness measuring 1/2 inch or greater to obtain a vegetation removal permit from Appalachian prior to plant removal for any purpose.

APPALACHIAN SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON
$37 MILLION ELECTRIC RELIABILITY UPGRADE IN ROANOKE

 
ROANOKE, Va., April 1, 2008 – Appalachian Power today released additional information about a $37 million electric transmission upgrade in the Dixie Caverns and Poor Mountain areas and is seeking public input into the siting process for the new facilities. This project is one of three upgrades in the Roanoke Valley totaling more than $62 million that the company announced in early March.

APPALACHIAN POWER SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON
$10 MILLION ELECTRIC RELIABILITY UPGRADE FOR ROANOKE

Appalachian Power is proposing construction of approximately two miles of a new 138 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line and a new electric substation to meet growing demands for electricity in parts of the City of Roanoke and Roanoke County. The company is asking for public input into the siting process for the new facilities.

AEP RECEIVES APPROVAL TO BUILD IGCC PLANT FROM WV PSC
American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) operating unit Appalachian Power has received authority from the Public Service Commission of West Virginia (WV PSC) to build a 629-megawatt Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) electric generating plant in West Virginia.

The WV PSC granted Appalachian Power a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the plant, which would be located beside the company’s existing Mountaineer Plant near New Haven, W.Va. Appalachian Power filed for the certificate Jan. 12, 2006. The plant’s estimated cost is approximately $2.23 billion.

APPALACHIAN ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR $62 MILLION
ELECTRIC RELIABILITY UPGRADES FOR ROANOKE VALLEY

ROANOKE, Va., March 6, 2008 – Summer peak electric demands in 2007 that exceeded forecasts combined with steady increases in electric demand have exposed problems in the electric transmission system in the Roanoke Valley. In the coming weeks Appalachian Power will announce three electrical upgrades worth $62 million to the 138 kilovolt (kV) system aimed at preventing overloads and ensuring the Roanoke Valley’s infrastructure is in compliance with national electric reliability standards. The upgrades will involve construction of new transmission lines and a new substation.

APPALACHIAN POWER, WHEELING POWER FILE REQUEST FOR INCREASED RATES WITH PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION

Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power, both subsidiaries of American Electric Power (AEP), today filed with the Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia seeking an annual increase in revenues of approximately $156 million, or about 17 percent, to be effective July 1, 2008. If approved as filed, bills for residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month would rise from $64.55 to $73.94, a $9.39 increase.

APPALACHIAN ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR $4.5 MILLION ELECTRIC RELIABILITY UPGRADE IN CAMPBELL COUNTY
Appalachian Power is proposing construction of a new $4.5 million 69 kilovolt (kV) electric substation to meet growing demands for electricity in northwestern Campbell County and southern Lynchburg.  The project entails constructing the substation on a site largely screened from view and integrating it into the electric transmission system. The company will hold a public workshop on the project 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Flat Creek Baptist Church, 14368 Wards Road, Lynchburg, Va.

Appalachian Power plans to meet a substantial percentage of its future generation needs with renewable generation sources, responding to policy and goals set forth in Virginia’s energy plan and statute.In a filing with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC)—the first made by a Virginia utility under the voluntary renewable portfolio standards (RPS) established by the Virginia General Assembly—Appalachian Power seeks approval of a plan to meet a 12 percent statutory goal for 2022 by increasing the generation of electricity supplied by renewable sources, including hydro and wind.

Roanoke, Va., December 5, 2007 – Appalachian Power today submitted an application to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeking approval to construct an $8 million, 138 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line and substation to serve customers in southern Botetourt, eastern Roanoke and western Bedford counties. Growing electric demands in this area are expected to tax the existing facilities to their capacity by summer 2008.   The proposed project meets the need and improves electric reliability in the area.

Some 2,000-plus new customers have joined Appalachian Power from the communities of Elkhorn, Kimball, Iaeger and War. The Public Service Commission of West Virginia directed Appalachian Power to acquire the electrical assets of those companies and begin serving customers on July 1.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia issued an order June 22 approving the joint stipulation and settlement agreement filed by Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power May 30. The Commission order grants the companies a combined annual increase in revenues of approximately $85.5 million, or 10 percent, effective July 1.

SHORELINE PLAN CONSTRUCTION BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT WHILE FERC CONSIDERS MODIFICATION

Appalachian Power has filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to amend the existing license for the Smith Mountain Project to ease in-water construction restrictions. However, Appalachian reminds property owners and contractors that the current ban on in-water construction activities beginning every year on February 15 remains in effect for 2007 until a FERC order to the contrary is issued.

Appalachian Power customers and AEP Appalachian Power customers in Kingsport, Tenn., set an unofficial all-time peak demand of 8,050 megawatts (MW) at 8 a.m. today. Temperatures in the teens and single digits across much of the company’s service area helped push electricity consumption past the previous record of 7,386 MW, set yesterday evening at 8 p.m., and marked the fourth all-time peak set in the last eight days.

CLAYTOR LAKE LEVEL TO BE LOWERED FOR MAINTENANCE
Appalachian Power announced that the water level of its Claytor Lake hydroelectric facility in Pulaski County will be lowered about five feet for cleanup and shoreline maintenance beginning Monday, Nov. 20. The lake will begin refilling to its normal level in about three weeks.

ROANOKE, Va., October 31, 2006 – Appalachian Power announces a change in hours of operation for its Smith Mountain Visitors’ Center.  October 29 through March 26 the Visitors’ Center will be open Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The facility’s hours of operation typically increase in the spring and summer.

SECTION OF ROUTE 62 TO CLOSE NEAR MOUNTAINEER PLANT OCT. 29

W. Va. Route 62 will close Oct. 29 from New Haven to the Philip Sporn Plant while workers install conveyors across the road at Appalachian Power´s Mountaineer Plant. Traffic will be detoured via county roads 9 and 3 for about 12 hours beginning at dawn. Detour signs will be posted.

PARTNERS WITH CRIME STOPPERS TO STOP THEFT

Appalachian Power recently implemented two new tools to help find and prosecute thieves who raid the company’s electrical facilities and put lives in jeopardy in pursuit of scrap metal. 
 
In September the company implemented a reward program across Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee, and in southern West Virginia Appalachian is partnering with Crime Stoppers, a regional tip line where callers can provide anonymous information about crimes. FOR CLEAN-COAL POWER PLANTS IN OHIO, WEST VIRGINIA
Construction preparation ongoing while AEP awaits regulatory approvals for cost recovery

American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), in an effort to continue moving its generation plans forward, today filed state environmental permit applications for clean-coal power plants in Ohio and West Virginia.
Separate applications were filed with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle, or IGCC, plants the company plans to build in Meigs County, Ohio, and Mason County, W.Va.

W.VA. COMMISSION APPROVES APPALACHIAN,
WHEELING POWER RATE CASE SETTLEMENT

The Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia yesterday approved without change the settlement previously filed in Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power’s general rate case. The Commission order grants the companies a combined annual increase in revenues of approximately $44 million or 5.5 percent, effective July 28.

Charleston, W.Va., July 19, 2006 – Appalachian Power customers set a new unofficial summer peak demand for electricity Monday, then topped that peak on Tuesday. Foundation to be Poured for New Unit 3 Stack at John E. Amos Plant
Over a 22-hour period beginning this afternoon, workers will pour and finish 4,300 cubic yards of concrete to form a new stack foundation for the John E. Amos Plant’s 1,300-megawatt Unit 3. The work is a major initial step toward completion of a more than $1 billion project to add flue gas desulfurization units, or scrubbers, to all three Amos Plant generating units.

Appalachian Power will lower the normal level of water in the reservoir at the Byllesby Hydro Plant on New River in Carroll County, Va., beginning May 21, 2006.The reservoir is expected to be returned to its normal level by October 15.

AEP DEDICATES WYOMING-JACKSONS FERRY LINE
Project Nears Completion 16 Years After Announced




American Electric Power (NYSE:AEP) dedicated its $306 million Wyoming-Jacksons Ferry 765-kilovolt (kV) transmission project, the largest electric transmission infrastructure project currently underway in the United States, today at a ceremony attended by federal and state officials and other dignitaries.  The new transmission line helps ensure an adequate supply of electricity can reach this region to meet growing energy demands. The line also enhances the overall reliability of the transmission grid.

Large Transformer on Last Leg of Journey to Amos Plant
A large transformer destined for Appalachian Power’s John E. Amos Plant will pass through Huntington on Sunday, Feb. 26. The 160-ton piece of equipment will make its way through the city beginning around 9:00 a.m. on a dual-lane trailer that is 20-feet wide and 150-feet long.

TO BUILD IGCC POWER PLANT IN WEST VIRGINIA

Appalachian Power yesterday filed an application with the Public Service Commission of West Virginia seeking authority to construct a 600-megawatt Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) electric generating unit in West Virginia. The proposed power plant would be located next to the company’s Mountaineer Plant near New Haven in Mason County.

AEP Appalachian Power to Assist Higher Education Center with Energy Technologies
AEP-Appalachian Power today signed a letter of understanding with the Beckley Higher Education Center to provide advice and assistance with energy technologies for the facility.
            The Higher Education Center, located east of Beckley along Interstate 64, will serve as a common location for seven institutions of higher learning to offer classes. In addition to providing the various schools a location for their course offerings, the Center will be a showplace for advanced building design and energy utilization.

ROANOKE, Va., January 24, 2005  – Approximately 50,000 Appalachian Power customers in the Roanoke Valley will get new electrical meters installed over the next several months as the company increases the use of automated meter reading equipment.  Radio frequency (RF) meters allow the company to remotely read meters using either a handheld or mobile unit, usually without even having to walk on a customer’s property.

American Electric Power is reorganizing its distribution and customer service operations into seven regional utility divisions, placing operational authority in the hands of division presidents and their support staffs. Appalachian Power, led by president and chief operating officer Dana Waldo, will serve approximately 975,000 AEP customers in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee, except those in the Wheeling, W.Va., area. Appalachian Power will have headquarters in Charleston, W.Va., with external affairs and regulatory services offices in Charleston and Richmond, Va.
