Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)
West Virginia is one of the states currently being considered for construction of a new Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant. IGCC is a clean coal technology that offers the potential to achieve the environmental benefits of gas-fired generation with the lower fuel costs associated with coal.

Appalachian Power has filed an application for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to construct a 629-megawatt IGCC plant in West Virginia. It also will file an application with the Virginia State Corporate Commission for approval of the West Virginia plant and recovery of project costs.

The proposed plant could be completed in mid-2012 at a cost of approximately $2.23 billion. It will be located in Mason County, W.Va., adjacent to the company’s Mountaineer Plant.
